The Bantam Mustangs football team took to the Matthew Halton field on Saturday afternoon, competing with the Lethbridge Bulldogs. The Mustangs were in great form, demonstrating excellent teamwork and scoring four touchdowns to win the game by a wide margin, blanking the Bulldogs.

The game looked really close for most of the first half, with the score tied at zero the entire first quarter. The Bulldogs frequently fumbled the ball, giving the Mustangs the opportunity to take possession. Early in the second quarter, the Mustangs seized this opportunity, scoring their first touchdown. The Bulldogs resorted to using several drop kicks and punts in order to try and keep back the Mustang line, with mixed results. The Mustangs ended the first half ahead 15-0 due to a couple of breakaways, though the game still looked close.

In the second half, the Mustangs demonstrated really good teamwork. They scored two touchdowns this half, and put forth a rock solid defence, stopping the Bulldogs cold whenever they tried to move the ball. Their offensive was mostly the result of the long runs they made whenever they squeaked past the Bulldog’s line. Our players also demonstrated strong sportsmanship, being quite conscientious of potential injuries, and quick to give a downed opponent space.  Final score: 27-0 for the Mustangs.

“The guys are really coming along,” said Coach Dan Crawford of his team’s progress. “They’re practicing hard, and learning their positions, and learning the plays for each position, and when they do what they’re supposed to do it really works.” He praised the Mustangs defensive strength, but suggested there may be room for improvement on their offense. “Our offense took a little while to get going, but when they got going they did really well too. We’ve got some really good athletes on the team. It’s nice.”

The Bantam Mustangs also played an away game against the Coaldale Bears on September 11, winning that one by a large margin.

Come watch the Bantam Mustangs next Saturday at the Matthew Halton field, where they are scheduled to play Claresholm, beginning at noon..
