Premier Redford fondly remembers Premier Lougheed
“I am deeply saddened by the death of my dear friend and mentor, Peter Lougheed. He was a powerful inspiration to me. He was a role model and mentor for me both personally and professionally since I first met him many years ago.
“Premier Lougheed was unquestionably devoted to Alberta and Alberta’s interests. He not only believed in a strong and united Canada, he believed that Alberta did not have to succeed at the expense of Canada, but as a proud member of a country working together - a country where all succeeded.
“He created a direction for Alberta that we can all be proud of today. Premier Lougheed had incredible vision which allowed for economic development of the oil sands, the creation of the Heritage Savings Trust Fund and for the ongoing development of Alberta’s arts and cultural industries, just to name a few. His forward-thinking, progressive vision gave us the tools to succeed today and helped to propel Alberta into a leadership role in Canada.
“Premier Lougheed was dedicated to serving Alberta and Canada and that did not end when he left public service. He has remained an eminent and well-respected voice on matters of public policy, and I was honoured to have been the recipient of that advice over the years.
“He was a great leader and an icon not only in this province but in Canada as well. I’m so thankful that we had the opportunity earlier this summer to pay tribute to Premier Lougheed as the best premier in Canada in the last 40 years.
"Beyond all his professional successes, Premier Lougheed was someone admired and respected on a personal level as well. He was a kind and compassionate man who never lost his ability to inspire and motivate those around him. It was an honour to know Peter, and I will miss my friend very much. On behalf of all Albertans, I extend my deepest sympathies to Peter’s wife Jeanne and the entire Lougheed family.”
