On the evening of Friday, September 15, the Pincher Creek Senior Mustangs played against the Willow Creek Cobras in front  of a sizeable crowd at the Matthew Halton field. The Mustangs were in peak form, putting forth a rock-solid defence to keep back the highly aggressive Cobras.  The Mustangs earned a safety, worth two points, at the start of the first quarter and spent the rest of the game fighting to keep their slim lead.

The Willow Creek Cobras heavily outnumbered the Mustangs by eleven players, and thus were able to make more frequent substitutions.

Early in the first quarter #60, Eddie Many Guns, one of the Mustangs heavy hitters, was taken out of the game as a result of a knee injury.  The Mustangs continued to give it their all, working hard to keep the Cobra offensive away from their goal-line. The game remained very close for the rest of the first half, culminating in a second injury for the Mustangs #8 Chase Gorgachuk.  The game was then paused for 15 minutes, while Gorgachuk waited for an ambulance to arrive and carry him off. As a result, half-time was skipped in order to conserve day-light.

The third quarter continued in much same way as the first half had, with the ball traveling across the field but no points getting put on the scoreboard.  In the second half the Mustangs were hurt by penalties, but managed to keep their slim lead. It wasn’t until near the end of the fourth quarter that the Mustangs made a field goal, cementing their victory, winning it 5-0.

In the last quarter, two players were injured; #81 Brandon Morgan, of the Mustangs, and #56 Robert Wilson of the Cobras.

“It was a really gutsy game by both teams” said Head Coach Peter Brannen afterwards.  “Our guys played with a lot of heart, they never gave up and a lot of them were playing with hurts and bangs, and yet I know they're going to be back next week. That says a lot about the kids in this community.”

“We have a few guys that are just kinda learning the ropes, so they're pretty green” he explained. “A close game like this, you try to put them in as the situation dictates. Good team effort.”

“These guys want to go to Provincials” Brannen said with a smile. “This team has never been in Provincials, and the boys want it. And what the boys want, we're going to help them get."

The Senior Mustangs have won all of their first three games this season.
They have another home game scheduled for this Friday, September 21 at the Matthew Halton Field against Kate Andrews , starting at 5:30 pm.
