Pincher Creek's Midget Huskies hosted the Magrath Chiefs at the MCC Arena on Saturday afternoon, October 21.
A sizable crowd was gathered to watch, and they were rewarded with a great game. Things got off to a fast start, right from the first drop of the puck, and the Huskies wasted no time in setting the pace. Just past 5 minutes in, with 14:49 on the clock, Huskies #11 Calahan Bruder scored, with assists by #6 Chase Bruder and #7 Stephen Mitchell. 48 seconds later, Chinooks #10 Josh Foster scored with the help of #17 Jared Koentges (formerly of the Southwest Rockies) and #9 Blair Goodreau. The Huskies continued to dominate throughout the first period, with a goal at 13:50 remaining by #23 Ryan Marshall, assisted by #21 Mike Roy. At 8:06 those to reversed, with Roy getting a goal and Marshall an assist. A front line to keep an eye on this season, for sure. At 7:55, right after the last goal, #16 Brett Tarcon slammed one home, and the score stood at 5-0 for the Huskies at the end of the first period.
This game came with penalties, and lots of them. In the first period the Chiefs had a total of 6 in the box, compared to 3 for the Huskies. In the second period they tied up in that regard with 5 penalties each.
The second period was as fast paced as the first, only this time the Chiefs got their defence together, and challenged Huskies goalie #35 Braeden Claringbull more often. After a lot of exciting back and forth action. With 19:10 on the clock, Chiefs' #25 was walked out after delivering a hit from behind. Neither team managed to take advantage of opportunities or penalties enough to get one past the opposing goalies, who were in fine form, and the period ended with the Huskies still ahead 5-0. The Huskies shut down Magrath's power play opportunities by largely by staying on the offensive, and when they needed him most Claringbull delivered.
The Huskies set the dial at 13 for the third period, seemingly determined to deliver great hockey. At 18:37 Huskies #9 Blair Goodreau scored, assisted by #4 Will Thorpe. At 14:53 Koentges scored, assisted by Goodreau (his second assist of the day). At 14:10 left in the game Calahan Bruder scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Tarcon and Koentges. Calahan racked up 7 penalties in the game.
Claringbull managed some big saves as the Huskies played shorthanded through much of the third due to penalties for much of the third, and at closing time it was 8-0 Huskies.
