Double fatality MVC near Rimbey

At 1:01 pm on December 21 Rimbey RCMP responded to a report of a serious, two vehicle collision on Highway 20 near Township Road 420. The investigation has revealed that a northbound car crossed the centre line and struck an SUV travelling the opposite direction. The car was occupied by a lone male who was deceased at the scene. The SUV had five occupants, one is deceased, at the scene. The remaining occupants of the SUV were transported to hospital in Red Deer with serious injuries. STARS Air ambulance assisted in the transport of one critically injured passenger. Highway 20 was closed during the investigation and has since been re-opened.

Initial investigation suggests that weather and road conditions were factors in this collision. More information may be available when the notifications of next of kin are completed.

Charges laid in assault of 6 yr old at Paul Band First Nation

The RCMP has laid charges in the serious assault of a six year-old girl that occurred on Saturday, December 20th on the Paul Band First Nation. The young girl continues to be treated in an Edmonton hospital for the serious injuries she sustained in the attack. The RCMP will not be releasing her name to protect her privacy.

James Clifford Paul, age 21, of no fixed address, has been charged with:
  • S 239(1)(b) CC - Attempted Murder
  • S 273(2)(b) CC - Aggravated Sexual Assault
  • S 279(1.1) (b) CC - Kidnapping
Mr. Paul was arrested by police on Sunday on the Alexis First Nation. He has been remanded into custody and is set to appear in Court on January 7th, 2015 on these matters.

“This arrest came about so quickly because local citizens picked up the phone and called investigators with the information they needed to take this dangerous criminal off the streets,” said Superintendent Gary Steinke, Officer-in-Charge of the RCMP Serious Crimes Unit. “Our focus now is on helping the victim’s family and community deal with the impact of this horrendous attack.”

The RCMP would like to thank the citizens of the Paul Band and Alexis First Nations who provided them with information that helped police locate and arrest Mr. Paul within a day of the incident. Dozens of RCMP officers from the Edmonton area worked on this investigation over the weekend with the assistance of Police Dog Services and the Forensic Unit.

Charges laid in death of Gleichan teen

On December 19th the Gleichen RCMP arrested 19 year old Austin Bigtobacco, of Siksika Nation.   Bigtobacco has been charged with second degree murder in relation to the death of a 16 year old man, also from Siksika nation. Bigtobacco is in custody and will make his next court appearance on January 8, 2015 in Gleichen.

RCMP would like to thank the community for their cooperation in this investigation.

Cypress County rollover results in impaired charges

On December 20, 2014 shortly after 10:00 pm, members of the Redcliff RCMP, Cypress County Fire, and EMS responded to a single vehicle rollover on township road 182 near range road 20 near Hilda, Alberta. Once at the scene police determined an older model Ford pickup truck was westbound on Township Road 182 when it went off the road into the south ditch before rolling into a field. The two male occupants of the vehicle both suffered head injuries and it was determined the passenger had been ejected from the vehicle. Further investigation determined the driver had been consuming alcohol before the collision. Both occupants were taken to the Medicine Hat Hospital for treatment. The 27 year old passenger was later flown to a Calgary hospital with serious head injuries.

A 27 year old male from Saskatchewan has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and refusing to provide a blood sample. He was released to appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on January 28, 2015. His name has not been released as the charges have not yet been sworn.

Travis Vader makes Queens Bench court appearance

Following the arrest of Travis Vader on December 20th, 2014, the RCMP brought Travis Vader before the court to speak to bail where he was ordered to be held in custody to appear on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014 @ 1:30 PM at the Court of Queens Bench in Edmonton. On that date and time he will make his first appearance to answer to the allegation that he murdered Lyle and Marie McCann on July 3, 2010.

The RCMP is unable to provide further public comment on this arrest. Media calls on this matter will not be returned.

Baby unharmed in Calgary stolen vehicle incident

The Calgary Police Service has one man in custody and charges are pending following an incident in the city's southeast. At approximately 5:45 pm on Sunday, December 21, 2014, police were called to the 10,000 block of Macleod Trail SE after a vehicle was stolen with a baby inside. The vehicle, a GMC Yukon, was left running with the doors unlocked while the driver, the child's mother, was inside a nearby store. The 10-month-old boy was left in a car seat in the back of the vehicle. The offender walked up to the vehicle and drove off with the child inside.

The vehicle was located around 6:10 p.m., in the 9800 block of Horton Road S.W., when the offender flagged down a passerby and asked them to call 911. Police and EMS responded to the scene.

The child was assessed by EMS as a precaution and was fortunately unharmed during the incident. The offender was arrested at the scene.

Police discourage anyone from leaving a vehicle with a child inside unattended for any reason, especially if the vehicle is running.

The Calgary Police Service has charged a Morley man in connection with the incident.

Killick Donnie HUNTER, 21, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with one count each of motor vehicle theft, operating a motor vehicle while unauthorized, and driving while uninsured.

He is scheduled to next appear in Calgary Provincial Court on Monday, Feb. 9, 2015.

Senior has parking mishap in Calgary

At approximately 2:45 pm December 20 a minor injury collision occurred in the parking lot of North Glenmore Park. A 2001 black Nissan Xterra, , driven by a 88 year old female was attempting to park in the handicap parking stall. The Nissan did not stop when it came to the curb and continued over the curb and up on to the grass boulevard. The Nissan bent over a handicap sign and continued over the pathway and over the embankment. The Nissan went over the embankment still on its wheels until coming to a drop off, where the Nissan pitched forward onto its front grille. The Nissan then flipped onto its roof and slid down the bank to the shore of the Glenmore Reservoir.

CFD extricated the driver, who was transported to the Foothills Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.

The Calgary Police Service is investigating. Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors.

Witnesses to fatal Edmonton assault sought

Detectives from the Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section are seeking witnesses to a fatal assault that allegedly occurred in southwest Edmonton in the early morning on Saturday, December 20, 2014. Police believe that three males, possibly known to each other, left an establishment in the area. It is reported a physical altercation between the three males occurred outside, leaving the 24-year-old victim unconscious. The 24-year-old male victim, Raad HAMZA, has succumbed to his injuries, passing away in hospital.

“We have reason to believe there were as many as six witnesses standing on the sidewalk in the area of 105 Avenue and 82 Street when the assault allegedly took place,” says Det. Dale Johnson with the EPS Homicide Section. “We’re encouraging these people to come forward with information.”

The suspicious death is still under investigation by the EPS Homicide Section. No charges have been laid at this time.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place Monday afternoon.

Dead baby birds and chestnuts among prohibited goods at YYC

On December 17, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Detector Dog Rusty and his handler intercepted a large quantity of prohibited food and animal products at the Calgary International Airport.

Detector Dog Rusty indicated on a traveller from Lebanon who had declared no food, plant, or animal products. During a secondary examination, the CBSA officers uncovered the following goods packed inside the traveller’s suitcase: 20 dead baby birds, 100 chestnuts, six bags of homemade cracked wheat and yogurt, two jars of homemade dairy cream, 100 seeds, and 15 stone fruit.

4th person charged in November Calgary bank robbery

The Calgary Police Service has charged a fourth person in relation to a bank robbery that occurred on Wednesday, November 26, 2014.

Kenza BELAKZIZ, 20, of Calgary, has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a firearm, and six counts of robbery using a firearm.  At the time of the robbery BELAKZIZ was an employee of the Bank of Montreal which was robbed.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, December 23, 2014.
Background:

At approximately 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, police were called to the Bank of Montreal in the 2300 block of 4 Street S.W., for reports of a robbery at the bank. Containment was set up to ensure the safety of those nearby, while officers determined if any suspects remained in the bank.

It is believed the suspects may have used firearms during the offence and that the staff remained locked within a room inside the bank during the robbery. Three men fled the scene. They were each located nearby and taken into custody without incident.

Employees of the bank were safely evacuated at approximately 9 p.m., and the Victim Assistance Unit was called out to provide support. No major injuries occurred as a result of this incident, however, one victim did have a minor injury and was assessed by EMS.

Lucas Wayne WINDSOR, 21, Saleem Obaid NASERY, 21, and Matthew Alexis VALDES, 23, all of Calgary, have each been charged with:
  • One count of disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Seven counts of forcible confinement
  • Seven counts of robbery using a firearm
  • One count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Theft of snowmobile and side-by-side at Norris Beach

Wetaskiwin RCMP are investigating a break and enter to a property at Norris Beach. It is believed that early in the morning of December 2nd, 2014, unknown suspects entered the unattached garage on the property by damaging the garage door. Several until items were taken, including a 2008 Summit Everest Ski Doo and a 2012 Wildcat Side by side.

Police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating the stolen items.
