Napi Friendship Association revitalized for 2015

Toni Lucas

Pincher Creek Napi Friendship Association (PCNFA) has recently gained a new Executive Director, Dianna Gray, who started in November 2014. Gray said that one of the mandates for PCNFA is to "support and service First Nation community members that are transitioning into an urban community, with a balance of advocacy, resources, language, and support." She said that there is a lot of room for growth in PCNFA and to that end has implemented some changes. There is a new Napi website, new programming, new initiatives, and new partnerships.

A few of the new initiatives include workshops on suicide prevention that will be happening on January 14, and January 15 - 16. "These are excellent preventative programs," Gray explained. A suicide alertness workshop is scheduled for January 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, and a two-day course is  scheduled for January 15 - 16 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.  Click here for more information.

There will be a two to three hour community consultation session hosted at the Napi Friendship Association on January 14 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This is happening with the participation of Alberta's Friendship Centres, partners, and stakeholders, to assist in identifying priorities and developing collaborative strategies for addressing those priorities for providing programs and services to Aboriginal people. It's an element of the ongoing process toward an Alberta-wide regional plan.

Gray is very excited about the current and new partnerships that Napi is involved in. She is very passionate about creating a better understanding between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people, and raising awareness of Aboriginal culture.

"We are forming a powwow committee, and will be hosting round dances for community participation."
