Pincher Creek's Midget Huskies played their 16th and final Spud league regular season game on Friday evening, February 20 on home ice at the MCC arena against Picture Butte's Blades.  The game was never really in doubt, the Huskies played the Blades three times before in the regular season and defeated them by a wide margin each time.   Despite being somewhat fatigued from their successful road trip to Great Falls to win the Casey Cup on the weekend and two successful Provincials games against Fort Macleod's Mustangs, this time the Huskies defeated the Blades 7-1.  This was the last regular season Spud League Midget game.

The game plan for the Huskies seemed to be pretty basic: establish an early lead, defend the net, brush up on plays.   The injured Tyson Goodreau acted as one of the assistant coaches for the Huskies.  Missing from the bench were Levi Anderson and Jared Koentges.

The Huskies scored 4 unanswered goals in the first period, coming from Jesson Luco, Chaz Vance, and 2 from Derek Tarcon.  Tarcon earned 2 assists, and Luco, Vance, and Kieran Douglas also earned assists.

The Blades played the best period I've seen them play against the Huskies this season in the second period.  Goalie Reed Graham was heroic in net for them, and their offence picked up significantly.  The Huskies scored only 1 goal in the second, almost 5 minutes in, that by Marc Sciarra, assisted by Derek Tarcon.  Ryan Cajka prevented a shutout, scoring for the Blades with 5:06 remaining in the period, assisted by Brayden Stokes.

Craig Marshall scored early in the final period for the Huskies, assisted by Chase Snider.  At the 13:39 mark Derek Tarcon scored, unassisted, to add a hat trick to the pile.  Tarcon finishes the regular season as the Spud League top scorer with 29 goals and 10 assists in 12 games.  The next 3 spots went to Bow Island players Trevor Langyel (22 goals and 2 assists), Kale Hughson (8 goals and 16 assists), and Brandon Lane (14 goals and 2 assists). Jesson Luco took 5th spot with 8 goals and 12 assists.  You can read the full list here at the Spud League website.

The Huskies finished their Spud League regular season with an enviable record of 15 wins and 1 loss, to finish atop the standings.  That loss was to Bow Island on January 3 at the Crowsnest rink.  Bow Island finished second in the regular season standings with 12 wins and 3 losses, all 3 losses from games against the Huskies.

Now it's time for playoffs and Provincials.  Watch this space for details, and come out and support our great Huskies team.
