The town run organic waste site has literally been trashed by people abusing the facility. "Really it is designed for organic waste," explained Town of Pincher Creek Director of Operations Al Roth, who expressed that it was set up to allow residents a place where they can get rid of lawn clippings, and leaves after raking, and small brush . "Really, it should have been almost no weight, but what we have been finding in there is dirt, rocks, household garbage, pieces of steel."  Roth said There has been more than one incident of tree stumps being dumped there. Even though they are organic, it is not what the bin was designated for. It's clearly marked as a site for grass clippings and leaves only.

"We temporarily closed the facility because no one is producing grass clippings or raking leaves right now," Roth said . "We understand that process is going to start in the spring, and we will re-open it then."

The site is relatively new. "We've never really had one in the past, other than the old area that we called the composting site, and it has never really been an issue. We are going to monitor it on a weekly basis, and if it starts being abused again, we will just simply lock the gate at night." Roth said he recognizes that this may cause issues for those that have been using it for the intended purposes. "It would be inconvenient, and we don't want to do that, but we may have to. We are going to try and keep it open 24 hours a day, like we have been, but we may have to think about other alternatives."

"The Crowsnest Pincher Creek Landfill Association has the contract to pick up our bin, and the last three times prior to us temporarily closing the organic waste facility, on average it has been 15,000 kg over, worth of extra weight." Roth said that the station has had individual weeks were it added $1,400 to the budget, over and above what they had arranged for. "That is over our budgeted amount, because it is all based on weight," explained Roth. "It only takes a few people to ruin it for everyone."
