Massive-that’s the word Jason VandenHoek, Executive Director of Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation (CRH Foundation) uses to describe the impact donors have had on health care delivery. It was another impressive demonstration of support for Chinook Regional Hospital on February 12 when Lethbridge and southern Alberta opened their wallets to the tune of $244,307 during Care From the Heart Day. That total surpasses the goal for the day of $220,000.

“For me, the radiothon is a time to look back and recognize the impact donors have made over the past year,” VandenHoek said. “Their gifts have touched every corner of the hospital, as well as Community Health programs throughout the city.”

For eleven hours, all six Lethbridge radio stations were on-air live at the hospital sharing stories of the great care delivered at CRH, and the donors who continue to generously support those services. In the six years since Care From the Heart Day moved from a telethon format to radio, over $1.3 million has been raised.

“The foundation has been focused on the expansion project at CRH over the last few years,” VandenHoek said. “We were delighted to see renovation of Day Procedures completed last year, and look forward to supporting the expansion through to completion this year.”

The expansion project provides a new five storey addition, which will include additional space for ambulatory/outpatient care, respiratory, labour and delivery, and neonatal intensive care. Redevelopment work is also underway in the Emergency Department.

This edition of Care From the Heart Day saw outstanding support from individual donors, service clubs and local businesses. Costco Wholesale – Lethbridge presented a cheque for $98,801.97 on behalf of their membership. Funds were raised through “toonie at the till,” corporate sponsorships and matching funds by Costco Canada. Costco support to CRH Foundation during six years of the Care From the Heart Radiothon and editions of the former Care From the Heart Telethon is now just under $1 million.

Balog Auction Services of Lethbridge held their annual Care From the Heart Charity Cattle Auction on February 4, raising over $45,000 for the cause. Local cattle producers were encouraged to donate an animal for sale, buy a donated animal or participate in a special “Lightning Round” where one animal was sold multiple times.

“My family, just like yours, has utilized the services of the Chinook Regional Hospital,” said Bob Balog, Honorary Chair of Care From the Heart Day. “We will all continue to experience the best of care thanks to the many generous donations that were received during Care From the Heart.”
