Short game, sweet victory for Halton Hawks over Vulcan Hawks

  • 2015 Tier 2 High School Baseball Championships in Pincher Creek and Hillcrest May 29/30 (schedule below)

Chris Davis

Pincher Creek's Halton Hawks played their last regular season game yesterday evening, May 26 at Sproule Field in Pincher Creek against Vulcan's County Central Hawks. The game was a make-up game for one that was postponed due to rain, and yesterday's game came perilously close to suffering the same fate. The game was supposed to run seven innings, but it ran long and it was decided to cap it at five inning, ending just after 8:00 pm. It turned out to be a high scoring five innings, with Pincher ultimately it 11-8 after strong first and fifth innings.

Beau Walter pitching for Pincher
Pincher Creek was ahead 5-2 at the end of the first, then Vulcan tied it in the second with three unanswered runs, pulling ahead in the third with two more unanswered runs. Pincher tied it at 7-7 in the fourth. One run for Vulcan in the fifth was answered with a steal home by Pincher's Deloy Mackenzie. 8-8. Bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, a hit by pitch sent Pincher's Brandan Giesbrecht home with a winning walk. 9-8. Chaos at the plate as Vulcan lost control of the ball enabled two more of Pincher's finest the irresistible opportunity to (almost simultaneously) steal home. To ice the cake, Pincher's Jaeger Hann hit one more home before being tagged out at first.

27 QABs for Pincher Creek's Deloy Mackenzie
Pincher's Matthew Duncan had a good game, doubling in the first and fourth innings, earning him first place for Quality At Bats (QAB) in the game. Other hometown highlights included an RBI single by Mitchell Zoratti in the first, Tyson Goodreau gleefully stealing bases with remarkable regularity, and Beau Walter on the mound pitching his way to five strikeouts, best in game. Walter also tied Vulcan's Nolan Perley with 11 first-pitch strikes. Walter is also fourth place in the league for QABs (11) and RBIs (13). Pincher's Deloy Mackenzie is the league leader with 27 QABs for the season.
