2015 Piikani Youth Rodeo ongoing every Tuesday evening

Christian Davis

Piikani's Crowlodge Arena is full of life again every Tuesday night (4:30 - 9:00 pm), filled with the sights and sounds of the Piikani Youth Rodeo. Since it's revival in 2013, approximately 60 youth of all races, colours, and creeds, between the ages of 5 and 25, gather each year to learn and practice skills in various rodeo events, including barrel racing, bull riding, steer riding, and equestrian.  At the top of the list, life skills.  Kids come from as far away as Lethbridge.  Safety is paramount, so kids are lined up with challenges appropriate to their skill level.

Aakom-Kiiyii Health Services sponsors the youth rodeo.  Hungers of the spirit, body, and mind are fed.  I've been to quite a few of them, and even MCd a couple of them, and every time I go I witness someone doing something completely new to them for the very first time.

Tyrone Potts and numerous volunteers help make it happen. Potts is an RCMP officer and a hockey coach, among other things. "Are the Peigan Cowboys coming back this year?" I asked him.  "We're kind  of on the fence," he replied.  Three-time World Saddle Bronc champion Jarrett Monroe is back, passing on his skills. International contender Shaylee French is helping again with the equestrian events.  Springpoint Colony is helping out, lending sheep again.  Hi Mike!  Kelsey Chief Moon is the stock contractor, providing steers along with Peigan CY Ranch and Murray Yellowhorn.

Potts says safety is emphasized, so kids are lined up with what they can handle.  I offered to ride a sheep.  He said "Until your probation is over."

PBR Bull Rider Jesse Flett Bull Rider is one of those helping out.  Here's a Ted Stovin video of Jesse riding Pop Rocks:

Stay tuned for more.  This is an evolving story.
