Peewee Chinooks defeat Bow Island Rebels twice

Josh Davis - On Saturday November 14 2015 the Pincher Creek Chinooks hockey team hosted the Bow Island B Rebels at the MCC arena. The Chinooks gained and early lead, and ultimately won 9-6.  The next day the two teams faced each other again, this time at the Foremost rink.  The Chinooks also came out ahead after that encounter, winning 5-4.

#6 Riley Potts started Saturday's game off right for the Chinooks, scoring his first goal a little over thirty seconds into the game, assisted by #3 Christian Berthiaume. The Chinooks kept control of the puck throughout the first period, and Potts scored two more goals, with one assist by #12 Alex Comeau. With 8:42 on the clock the Rebels' #10 Kai Uchekura scored the first goal for his team, with an assist from #7 Kade Degenstein. The Chinooks faced a single two-minute penalty in the first period for tripping, while the Rebels faced their own two-minute penalty for boarding.

The Chinooks took a two-minute penalty for tripping near the start of the second period. The Rebels' #5 Brinley Degenstein took the opportunity to score a goal unassisted during the power play. However, the Chinooks immediately followed this with another goal of their own, scored by Alex Comeau and assisted by #5 Logan Deley and #8 Caleb Evans. The Chinooks demonstrated improved passing this game, and Comeau would score a second goal in this period for the Chinooks, as would Riley Potts. Kai Uchekura scored one more goal for the Rebels, bringing the score to 6-3 at the end of the period.

Each side scored three goals in the third period. For the Chinooks, Caleb Evans scored one goal, assisted by Potts and #2 Jaron Scotton, while Alex Comeau and #27 Rhett Fitzpatrick scored one goal each. Brinley Degenstein scored two goals for the Rebels, one during a power play, and #9 Nicholas Hoffman scored once, assisted by #14 Janaya Laqua. Each team spent two minutes in the penalty box this period.

Chinook player Alex Comeau said he felt pretty good about the way his team performed on the evening. "I think we just wanted it more," he explained. Comeau said that the environment was relaxed in the locker room before the game. We mostly just listen to music, and kind of talk around. We're not throwing stuff or anything." Comeau has been playing hockey for seven years, and said his greatest strength as a player is his speed.

The Chinooks travelled to the Foremost rink the next day, where they again played the Rebels, winning that game by a narrower margin, 5-4.

Novice Chinooks defeat Foremost Flyers in home-ice barnburner

Christian Davis - Pincher Creek's Novice B Chinooks hosted the Foremost Flyers at the MCC Arena on Sunday afternoon, November 15.  The fans in attendance were treated to a hotly contested game between two well matched and energized teams.  The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first, then it was tied 4-4 at the end of the second, a score that stood until the latter half of the final period, when the Chinooks went on a scoring spree to win it 8-4.

The first goal of the game was earned by Flyers #17 Jace Klemenz at the 4:50 mark of the first period, unassisted.  That goal was answered just 20 seconds later by Chinooks #16 Walker Anderson, unassisted. 1-1 at the end of the first.

The play was concentrated in the Chinooks' end for the first few minutes of the second,  but then Chinooks #11 Daxz Vance put the team ahead 2-1 at the 16:09 mark, assisted by #17 Cashe Kropinak.  Walker Anderson scored again at the 13:57 mark, assisted by Daxz Vance, to make it 3-1 Chinooks.  Foremost answered with an unassisted goal by #8 Ryker Hollingsworth 13 seconds later, and #17 Jace Klemenz also scored unassisted for the Flyers at the 11:25 mark to tie it 3-3.  With 5:30 remaining in the period Walker Anderson scored again, assisted by #9 Hunter McMullen and Cashe Kropinak.  4-3 Chinooks.  That was answered by Flyers #4 Dane Hirsche just over two minutes later, assisted by #2 Lincoln Kurtzweg and #17 Jace Klemenz, and the period ended like the first, in a tie.

The score stayed at 4-4 for the first half of the final period, with both teams playing hard.  Chinooks #10 Maddox Prout broke the impasse with a goal at the 8:39 mark, assisted by #17 Cashe Kropinak. 5-4 Chinooks.  That proved to be the winning goal. Walker Anderson scored his 4th goal of the game for the Chinooks, unassisted.  At the Novice level 4 goals is all you get, and Walker makes sure to get his every game.  Two more unassisted insurance goals from Chinooks #19 Hunter Littlebear and it was all over, 8-4 for the Chinooks.  Chinooks goalie Bowen Hann played a major part in their success, making 8 saves, some of them big one-on-one shut-downs.

There were four minor penalties in the game, three of them going to the Chinooks.

Blades defeat Atom A Chinooks

Christian Davis - The Atom Chinooks traveled to Picture Butte on Sunday.  Picture Butte's Blades won 14-7 after dominating the first half of the game.  Lane Conley scored four times for the Chinooks, including two unassisted goals.  Drew Stuckey scored twice for the Chinooks.  Jayden Draper scored once for the Chinooks and earned an assist.  Aiden Potts earned two assists.  Also earning assists for the Chinooks were Christian Potts and Travis Bastien.
