A Boys Basketball - Dragons defeat Hawks

Toni Lucas

Matthew Halton's 2A Boys (Grade 8) Hawks Basketball team hosted the St. Michael's A Dragons on Tuesday afternoon, January 26. The two teams have had some triumphs and defeats this season and in this case the Dragons won by a wide margin. The top scores of the game were Hawks Ben Mitchell and Dragons Taite Jessen, each with 19 points.

Dragons Coach Dr. Tobias Gelber said "These guys have been practicing hard, they have been practicing four days a week, and they are starting to come together. They are starting to exhibit some of the skills we have been working on. I am happy with the progress, but there is always work to do. We're about 50% for our games, in league play, we lost to Brocket, we've beaten the Crowsnest Pass, we lost to Lundbreck, and we have beaten both Halton teams. In tournaments, we face some stiffer competition in the middle part of the province. There was supposed to be a tournament this weekend, that's not going to happen for us. We will be playing a couple more league games, next week, followed by another tournament in St. Mary's, and Livingstone's tournament.

Matthew Halton Grade 8 A2 Coach Chris Ney said, "The kids are playing phenomenally. Unfortunately we had hockey kids gone today, and band kids gone today, we were missing a few of our boys off the team. Overall the kids, we are developing fundamentals in them, and you can see it pay out on the court where they are making their passes, their ball handling is great, so things are really coming together quite well. We won a couple games this year, and they are in the grade nine league, so it has been really good to have that foundation."

Matthew Halton High School is hosting a six-team B Boys Basketball tournament this Saturday, January 30, starting at 8:00 am and finishing around 8:00 pm.
