The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, P.C., M.P., Minister of National Revenue, today announced the launch of the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) new Auto-fill my return service. This new fast and secure service represents the first major step towards allowing Canadians to automatically fill in their income tax and benefit returns, and is one of the many ways the Government of Canada is expanding online, individualized service for Canadians.
"The Government of Canada is committed to providing Canadians with faster and more personalized service. Auto-fill my return helps Canadians access the benefits to which they're entitled by giving them automatic access to their individual information, making filing easier and simpler. Auto-fill my return represents a major first step towards auto-population of returns, and is a prime example of how the Government of Canada is leveraging technology to support Canadians who want to file without using paper forms."" - Diane Lebouthillier, P.C., M.P., Minister of National Revenue
Available as of February 15, 2016, this secure service allows users to automatically complete certain parts of their income tax and benefit return when they file online using certified tax preparation software that includes the service. Auto-fill my return draws from information the CRA already has on file related to:
- T3, T4 and T5 slips;
- registered retirement savings plans;
- Home Buyers' Plans;
- Lifelong Learning Plans;
- non-capital losses;
- capital gains and losses;
- capital gains deductions;
- federal and provincial tuition, education, and textbook carryover amounts;
- instalment payments;
- and more.
Launching Auto-fill my return is just one of the many ways in which the CRA is fulfilling its commitment to client-focused service, and supporting Canadians who wish to file taxes using no paper forms. Complementing this, the CRA is also introducing a series of other new measures that will help Canadians access the benefits to which they are entitled, and to understand and fulfill their tax obligations every year. Other service improvements include making it easier for Canadians to apply for the Disability Tax Credit, improved CRA correspondence that is easier to understand, and expanding the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program to reach individuals whose first language is neither French nor English.
Auto-fill my return can be used by anyone who is registered for the CRA's online service, My Account (www.cra.gc.ca/myaccount), and who uses compatible certified tax preparation software.
My Account provides registered Canadians with access to the CRA's full suite of self-service options. It's fast, secure and available 24/7.
