Derek Saretzky charged with first degree murder charge in death of Hanna Meketech

Today, the RCMP can confirm that 23 year-old Derek Saretzky of Blairmore, Alberta has been charged with the first degree murder of Hanna Meketech.

The body of Hanna Meketech was discovered in her Coleman, Alberta residence during the evening of Wednesday, September 9, 2015. That same day, the RCMP launched a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 69-year-old woman. On September 11, 2015 the Calgary Medical Examiner's Office determined Hanna Meketech's death was the result of a homicide.

The investigation was intensive and utilized the skills and expertise of several specialized sections including the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit – South (MCU) and Forensic Identification Section (FIS), as well as resources from the Crowsnest Pass RCMP detachment.

The RCMP would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the public who came forward with information and tips to assist police in this investigation.

The Lethbridge Crown Prosecutor's Office is managing the criminal proceedings in which Derek Saretzky is the accused, including the murders of Hanna Meketech, Terry Blanchette and Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette. Saretzky's next court appearance has yet to be determined, but will be coordinated by the Lethbridge Crown Prosecutor's Office.

No additional Information will be available now as this matter is before the court and it would be inappropriate for the RCMP to comment on this investigation or any evidence which has yet to be presented and tested in court.
