A song for Fort McMurray

One road in, One road out
Turn to the north
Or turn to the south
As the smoke and the flames devour our town
It leaves fear in our hearts
Our city will burn down.

Hi there. My family and I live in Pincher Creek but have lots of family affected by the Fort McMurray wildfire. My parents recently left to go visit my family at their camp (Bonneyville ), where they are currently staying. A few have lost homes and the rest we aren't sure about. All of this really "hits close to home".

Anyway the reason I'm writing you is because on my parents' 10 hour drive to go support my family, my dad wrote a poem/song for all the people being affected by this wildfire.  I'd like to share it with you. I think it is absolutely amazing and am so proud of my dad!

To all the people of Fort McMurray

The fires are raging
The winds are so strong
our hope it is fading
We fear it won't be long.

I feel the fury of something so real
The flames are coming closer
The threat we can feel.

We have to get out
There's so little time
I want to stay and protect what is mine
The life I am building
The struggles within
Stolen away in a moment
The horror begins.

One road in, One road out
Turn to the north
Or turn to the south
As the smoke and the flames
Devour our town
It leaves fear in our hearts
Our city will burn down.

Our home is in danger
The fire's at the fence
We need to get out
We have no defense.

Some homes now are on fire
It's out of control
God please help us
We have no where to go.

One road in, One road out
Turn to the north
Or turn to the south
As the smoke and the flames
Devour our town
It leaves fear in our hearts
Our city will burn down.

So many times the fires burn free
Yet so often we think
It won't happen to me
But this time it's so real
The flames have control
As we try to escape
And our families we hold.

We fear for our lives
All the destruction and pain
We look to the sky
And pray for the rain.

The pictures are heart wrenching
What can I do
To ease your sorrow
And help you get through.

One road in, One road out
Turn to the north
Or turn to the south
As the smoke and the flames
Devour our town
It leaves fear in our hearts
Our city will burn down.

To stand by and watch
Everything you own
Disappear before you
Are sights unknown.
God help us survive this
So much has been lost
We need someone to lean on
No matter the cost.

With open arms
The people are there
To shelter and help us
And show that they care
Give us the will Lord
Show us the way
Right now it's not clear
And words cannot say
How devastated we are
As our lives burn away.
One road in, One road out
Turn to the north
Or turn to the south
As the smoke and the flames devour our town
It leaves fear in our hearts
Our city will burn down.

In times of trouble
And our future unknown
The flames surround us
But we are not alone
Through the dark gloom that Hans over
The sun will again shine
Trouble will pass
I know we'll be fine.

To our rescue they came
Without fear or doubt
Their only goal
To get us all out
The courage and strength
Of those Sent to help
Cannot be measured
But in our hearts
Will always be felt.

To put your own life on the line
To save someone else
Is a question best answered
By God himself.

As the love pours in
As well the help
From all those unknown
Our pain it is felt.

As we are ushered to safety
We can only believe
Our city is gone
And has left us to grieve.

Through all the smoke and the tears
We fear everything is gone
But for the good people of McMurray
Our lives will go on.

One road in , One road out
Turn to the north
Or turn to the south
Though the smoke and the flames
Has devoured our town
We will rebuild our lives
And restore our own

The fires may destroy us
And force us to the ground
But we are strong people
A life's lesson we have found

Through the grace of God
And the help of all
The city of Mc Murray
will not fall.

May God be with us all in our time of trial and sorrow, and thank you all for your love and support.

God Bless.

  1. This was written by my brother-in-law. I love in Ontario and have friends here who have family that have lost everything and some are travelling to Ontario cuz they really have no where else to go. I have shared it with them and told them to share as well. These words tell what some many r feeling but unable to express. Derek is an amazingly caring man with compassion. God bless you for these words.
