Hawks prepare to wrap up strong rugby season with a trip to Provincials

2016 Matthew Halton Senior Girls Hawks rugby team

Chris Davis - Matthew Halton's Senior Hawks placed second in Zones after a wide margin playoff win against Vulcan at home at Sproule Field on Tuesday May 24 against Vulcan's Hawks and an away Zones final loss against Taber on Monday May 30, resulting in Tier 3 Zones Silver for the Pincher Creek team. The Halton Hawks will be travelling to Lethbridge this weekend to compete in Provincials.

 Vulcan Hawks

The Pincher team had their "Best game of the year so far" against Vulcan, according to coach Randy Whitehead.   Rebecca Lowry led the Pincher charge with 4 tries (20 points), Taylor Wells scored two tries and a conversion.  Ashtyn Duncan scored two tries.  Leigh Erickson and Sam Williams scored a try each.  Vulcan's Kayara Wardley scored two tries and her teammate Jasmynn Lourens scored a conversion.

Prior to Zones Halton coach Whitehead said "We're going to be playing two games on Friday, so that's going to be the tough one. And injuries, we only have two or three subs left so that's going to be a tough thing. Overall, I think we have a decent shot at Tier 3, other than Taber. We could have a chance to see them in the final at that too, as well." That prediction proved to be quite accurate.

After Zones coach Whitehead  said "We were short handed from the start, only dressing 15 players due to other commitments and illness. So, the girls came away with a silver Zone medal. The bright news is that the South Zone does get two berths for Tier 3 Girls Provincials, so the Halton Girls Rugby team will be at Provincials this weekend in Lethbridge."

The Zones loss against Taber's Rebels was not unexpected, after the Rebels defeated the Hawks by a wide margin during the regular season on May 5 (see story below).

I asked coach Whitehead what challenges he anticipated the Halton Hawks might face next season.  "Next year will be a little young in terms of the numbers, as we'll only have three grade 12's, but with a lot of experience because a lot of my grade 11s and 10s are in their third year already, so they've got the experience. The three years after that should be really good if I keep everyone going."

"Next year will be a little bit of a tough year, but I think there is still potential because of their experience. Some have been playing since grade 8, grade 9."

Graduating Halton Hawks

Hawks host Taber Rebels

Josh Davis - On Thursday May 5 the Matthew Halton Hawks Rugby team took to the field, playing the Taber Rebels. The Rebels SV team started off strong and had excellent support throughout the whole game, scoring try after try in both halves. Taylor Wells had the lone try for Halton. The JV Hawks had a better day, with Madilyn Whitehead and Abby Big Swan scoring a try each, and the team playied a stronger defensive game. However, the Rebels won a large margin win in this game as well. “There were some bright spots from the Halton side which we hope to build on before playoffs,” said Hawks coach Randy Whitehead.
