First steps

Chris Ney - How precious are the first steps of a baby, or perhaps the first steps of your first child. They are memories that we never forget, in fact often times we record them so we will always be able to go back and remember what it was like. We can remember the awkwardness, the stumbling, even the falling down, but one thing that really sticks with us is the memory of them getting back up and trying again. We know that they will fall again, yet we cheer them on and encourage them to walk. We get excited when walking turns to running and that seems to be when life really takes off at full speed.

Then later in life we get to see a lot of first steps, from walking to running, from running to riding a bike, from riding a bike to driving a car; so many first steps in ones lifetime. Then what happens? It becomes an everyday event and all of a sudden what was cute, is now annoying because they are everywhere, they are in the dog dish, in the cupboard, or sitting on your favorite chair with a whole tub of peanut butter, eating it with their bare hands. Either way the novelty seems to wear off and we start to in ways take it for granted. Funny thing is that being a follower of Jesus can end up the same if we get complacent.

It is something that we get so excited for, someone making a first time commitment to Jesus, to someone getting baptized. That is exciting!!!, then what? Is that it or is there more? Well there is more, there is life, and life abundant in following Jesus. In the book of John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Just like us though we don’t get this abundant life by being babies. We have to grow up, just like us, and our kids, from first steps to driving there was a process of getting bigger physically but also growing up into maturity. Jesus wants us to have an abundant life in Him but it wont happen if we are not growing, if we are stuck, it will only happen by growing. By getting our first steps underway, and from there not staying a baby, but desiring to grow. This starts simply by a few things, prayer, reading God’s word (the Bible), and finding a church that will help you grow.

First things first however, you can’t run until you can walk, you can’t grow unless you have been born. Born a new into the family of God. That happens by believing that Jesus is Lord and Savior, and by confessing with your mouth that God has raised Him from the dead, by confessing to God and asking Him for forgiveness because He is the only that can forgive you. Love ones that is the first step, to knowing Jesus as Lord and Savior, take the first steps and then from there learn and grow in Him.

If you have already given your life to Jesus or maybe even while reading this you decided to follow Jesus, and your wanting to find family I would like to invite you to join us at Vertical Church Sunday mornings @10:30am at 1200 Ken Thornton Blvd. You don’t have to be perfect in fact I love the saying no perfect people allowed. We are all messy and make mistakes, but this is a family for the broken, and for those who want to take first steps or walk or run. All to the glory of God

You are Loved
