Two vehicle fatality collision on Highway 3 at Leitch Collieries

Chris Davis- An early morning collision between a car and pickup truck on Highway 3 at Leitch Collieries (just east of Hillcrest, approximately 10 km west of Highway 22) took the life of the pickup truck driver.  The other driver was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries. Both vehicles had a single occupant.

According to a Crownsnest Pass RCMP press release "A westbound sedan collided with an eastbound pick-up truck. The driver of the pick-up truck died as a result of the collision, the driver of the sedan was treated for minor injuries. A third vehicle was involved after the initial collision resulting in property damage."

"The RCMP in Crowsnest Pass and the RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate this collision. All possible contributing factors relating to the cause of this collision are being investigated. The identity of those involved is not being released at this time until proper notifications can be made."

Crowsnest Fire Rescue, Pincher Creek Emergency Services, and Crowsnest Pass RCMP responded to the incident at 5:30 am. According to RCMP Cpl. Gudmundson and PCES Deputy Chief Pat Neumann extremely icy road conditions were likely a contributing factor to the collision. Neumann said it was difficult for first responders to stay standing on the icy highway.  As of 11:30 am on Tuesday, October 10 traffic analysts were still on-scene and one lane of Highway 3 was reopened for alternating controlled traffic.
