Fatal MVC on Hwy 3 near Coalhurst

RCMP Alberta - Coaldale RCMP along with Fire/EMS from Coalhurst and Lethbridge this afternoon and evening have responded to numerous collisions on Highway 3 just west of the Coalhurst access.

Heavy sudden snowfall caused severe adverse driving conditions with low visibility and slippery roads. At approximately 3:00 p.m. a semi truck hauling a trailer eastbound on Highway 3 came upon a four vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 509 partially obstructing the eastbound lanes of Highway 3. The semi truck and trailer therefore began to slow on Highway 3. A blue 2003 Buick Century following the semi truck and trailer did not slow down, slid on the icy highway and struck the rear of the trailer causing significant damage to the drivers side of the car. The driver, a 67 year old female from Lethbridge was pronounced deceased on scene from the impact.

Westbound traffic on Highway 3 was restricted to a single lane. Eastbound traffic is being re-routed around the collision scene. A RCMP traffic reconstructionist is attending the collision scene to assist with this investigation.

Traffic on Highway 3 eastbound just west of the Coalhurst access road will be re-routed for several hours allowing for this investigation to be conducted.
