On Tuesday evening, October 25, the  Matthew Halton volleyball courts were busy.

The Matthew Halton High Hawks 'B' Boys faced the Piikani Nation Secondary School Redskins Boys.  The Redskins came out on top in the first two sets, 12-15 in the first one and 23-25 in the second.  Hawks Coach Andrew Janzen noted that "the boys did step it up at the end, to take the last set."  The score in that one was 25-15 for the Halton team.

Simultaneously on the adjacent court, the Girls Matthew Halton Junior A Hawks were up against the F.P Walshe Flyers.  The Hawks were working together better than previously, having improved on both their communication and teamwork.  The Hawks had their wings clipped in the first two sets, 16-25 and 9-25 for the Flyers respectively, but that did not seem to discourage the crowd that was watching.  In that crowd was a future Hawk.  Hawks #12 is Robyn Lively, and her sister, Martyna is a grade five student at Canyon School.  She came as a mini-Hawk to encourage her sister. The Hawks rallied to take the last set 26-24.

Flyers Coach Mike Bourassa is into his second year of coaching these girls.  "I am really proud of how they play  as a team.  The girls have worked on their passing and serving, and it has all come together."

Tanis French is Coach for the Hawks.  Although it is her first year working with the girls, she has had four years experience coaching volleyball.  "I have three rules that I follow.  One: Have fun.  Two: Learn something. Three: Win.  If you follow one and two, three should be easy."

The Halton A Girls play next at Brocket on Thursday the 27, at 4:15.

After the offical game, the girls played an exhibition game for practice, and for the enjoyment of the game.  For that match Martyna Lively stepped up to be a fine feathered scorekeeper.
