Albertans encouraged to nominate someone for enriching the lives of persons with disabilities

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Awards. These awards are presented annually to recognize people who work toward creating communities where all citizens can participate fully.

There are six awards: the Gary McPherson Leadership Award, the Marlin Styner Achievement Award and four Awards of Excellence in the areas of education, employment, community and public awareness.

The Gary McPherson Leadership Award is presented to an exceptional individual who has helped enrich the lives of people with disabilities. The Marlin Styner Achievement Award is a newly created award for 2012. Mr. Styner was appointed to the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities in 2005 and served as Council Chair from 2008- 2011. This award acknowledges the passion and commitment he brings to all his endeavors. It will be presented to an individual living with a disability who has demonstrated outstanding achievement.

The Awards of Excellence recognize individuals, teams or organizations that have shown a commitment to the full inclusion of persons with disabilities as demonstrated by their actions in one of the four award categories. Since 2003, when the awards began, there have been 43 award recipients.

Anyone can nominate an Albertan for these awards. Nominations for all awards are open until October 31. Award recipients will be formally recognized in their communities, often at events coinciding with International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.

Nomination packages are available on the Alberta Human Services website at http://humanservices.alberta.ca/premierscouncil-awards or by calling 1-800-272-8841.
