Accident near Cochrane claims the life of Fort Macleod woman

Today, December 27, 2012, at approximately 1015 a.m., Cochrane RCMP were dispatched to assist EMS at a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway #1, east of the Scott Lake Hill.

As officers were en route, additional information was received that there was now a fatality involved, and that EMS had launched STARS to respond.  It has now been confirmed the accident claimed the life of a 69 year old female from Fort Macleod.  The 72 year old driver and husband of the deceased remains in hospital in serious condition.

Police understand now, that there were two unrelated collisions in the same area of the highway, with the second crash involving three vehicles.

Preliminary information from the scene indicates that a westbound vehicle lost control, entered and crossed the median into the eastbound lane.  The vehicle was spinning out of control when it struck an eastbound van which collided head on with an eastbound Alberta Sheriffs prisoner transport van.

The condition of the two injured Sheriffs has been reported as stable.
Alcohol / drugs are not considered to be factors in this collision.

The west bound lanes have been re-opened and the Cochrane RCMP expect to re-open one east bound lane of Highway 1 by 5:00 p.m.

The names of the deceased and the driver are not being released at this time.
