Significant park closures in effect for Kananaskis Country

Due to the extreme flooding in southern Alberta, most of the provincial parks in the Kananaskis Country recreation area will be closed this long weekend to keep the public safe. There has been significant damage to much of the area. Roads, trails and the ground are unstable and pose safety risks.

Area closures in Kanasaskis Country include popular recreational and campgrounds such as:

  • Peter Lougheed Provincial Park
  • Evan Thomas Provincial Recreation Area, where Kananaskis Village is located
  • Elbow Sheep Wildland Provincial Park

An online map is available for a complete picture of the Kananaskis area closures.

Wyndham Carseland Provincial Park south east of Calgary is closed indefinitely. Staff at Fish Creek Provincial Park are working hard to open as much of the park as possible.

Due to the significant closures because of the floods, Alberta Parks will offer full refunds for campground reservations cancelled between now and the end of July. Campers must call 1-877-537-2757 to request a refund. Refunds will not be processed online.

The majority of Alberta’s provincial parks and campgrounds are open. For a complete listing of advisories, notices and campground availability across the province, visit, follow @Albertaparks or join Alberta Parks on Facebook
