  • Upcoming fundraisers: BBQ at Sobey's parking lot on Wednesday July 24 from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm, Carwash on Friday July 26 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Cougar Car Wash (984 Maple Street)

For over 12 years in Pincher Creek Group Group Youth has been the administration of  Youth Employment Services (YES), a not-for-profit organization aimed at helping youth from the ages 10 to 24 find summer employment.  The service offered free to both the students and potential employers.  Coordinator Daisy Smith has taken the YES helm for the 2013 summer season.  Smith helps prepare youngsters for the work world by involving them in workshops, entrepreneurial projects and fund raising ventures, volunteerism, and job placement.

The program is designed to empower students and to find summer employment that is suitable to their needs. YES offers a free database of potential workers that can be accessed by employers in Pincher Creek and surrounding areas.  They also gather information from potential employers.  These jobs that employers contact the program for include full-time, part-time, and odd jobs.  Yardwork, painting, pet care, and  babysitting are just a few of the skills that are offered by the students.  "There are a wide range of skills.  So many of these kids are so enthusiastic," said Lynne Teneycke, who manages Group Group Youth.  "Some are just an hour once, mowing a lawn, some are full time, for the whole summer."

The program helps students develop skills such as problem solving, time management, financial skills, networking and effective communicating.  Working in the community widens their skills, adds to their resume and create references for the future.  This is done through a combination of jobs, workshops, entrepreneurial ventures, fundraising and volunteering.

The first two entrepreneurial ventures this year are fundraisers for the program.  A YES barbeque will be held in the Sobey's parking lot on Wednesday July 24 from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm.  A YES Carwash will be held Friday July 26 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Cougar Car Wash located at 984 Maple Street.  The cost will be $10.00/vehicle.

Youth Employment Services can be reached at 403-904-0010 and is located at 1018 Waterton Avenue in the Group Group Youth building.  You can email them at yespcreek@yahoo.com and you can see some of the work that goes on at Group Group Youth at the website  www.groupgroupyouth.org
