2014 Active Living Challenge

Megan Rainford, Summer Events Coordinator

During the month of June, the Town of Pincher Creek Recreation Department challenged members of the community to get outside and get moving with the Annual Active Living Challenge. 16 teams with over 140 competitors joined in to work toward meeting Canada’s Guidelines for physical activity and recreational screen time.

This year the Challenge was revamped to be paired with June is Recreation and Parks month. Participants were encouraged to take advantage of the warmer weather and the various outdoor areas around Town. Prizes were awarded to the top teams and individuals earned entries into the final grand prize draw for a Waterton Lakes National Park group pass.

“As a Recreation Department, we feel strongly about fostering a sense of community and encouraging individuals to lead healthy, happy lifestyles. The Active Living Challenge offers an opportunity for groups of people to come together and kick-start their summer in a positive way. We were thrilled to have so many teams participating this year – we had more than expected and ended up having to order more pedometers for participants to track their steps!” (Megan Rainford, Summer Events Coordinator).

The Canadian Guidelines outline that children and youth (5-17 years) should strive for at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily, and no more than 2 hours per day of recreational screen time (non-work/school related, e.g., watching TV, playing video games, using cell phones to interact on social media sites). Adults (18+) should strive for at least 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more, and no more than 2 hours per day of recreational screen time.
