Mayor Don Anderberg's New Year message

Mayor Don Anderberg
Town of Pincher Creek Mayor Don Anderberg

At this time of year we reflect on the past year and look forward to the future year. The past year in Pincher Creek has had a variety of changes, many good and some that have been challenging for a number of our citizens.

Over this past year, with the direction of Town Council and the dedicated enthusiastic work of administration and Town employees, a number of projects have been completed. Some of these include a major sewer and water project, ongoing expansion of walking trails, maintenance and upkeep of sidewalks and streets, bus parking at Canyon School, and mapping and computerized records for Fairview Cemetery.

Pincher Creek co-hosted the Southern Alberta Summer Games in July. This was a major undertaking for our community but as usual the citizens, volunteers and Town employees mad the 2014 Games one of the most successful ever. Thank you all once again for helping to show our visitors what we can do in Pincher Creek.

The Town of Pincher Creek was invited to participate in the bid for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. This was embraced enthusiastically by our community. Even though we were not successful, the process had numerous positive outcomes and expanded relationships with our southwest Alberta neighbors.

The planning retreat held in February has given positive direction to Council and staff over the course of the year. Much groundwork has taken place and we are moving diligently forward into 2015 to address community housing needs, regional transportation, including in-town busing concerns, regional solid waste pickup, expanded and updated directional signage and more support for our community initiatives through economic development. We are also assessing facility upgrades or replacement through the Facilities committee.

Another area of focus is working with community groups and organizations to maintain a good working relationship and help where the Town can to support and enhance their contributions to our community. An example of this type of collaboration is the new SPCA facility and also helping to support the move of the Turcott building to the museum.

We have recently approved a 2-year Operating and a 4-year Capital budget, and along with a new 4-year Union agreement with our employees, Pincher Creek is well positioned for 2015 and beyond.

On behalf of myself, Council, and Town staff, we wish you a healthy and prosperous new year.
