Landfill Association talks responsibilities, upgrades, and proposed projects

Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill Association press release

The Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill Association has been in operation since 1976 as the first Regional Landfill in Alberta. It is our goal to operate this facility in pursuit of our moral, ethical and environmental responsibilities.

We are excited to be upgrading our facility with expansion and improvements to our recycling service. To help not just our communities but to educate the next generation on the importance of recycling.

Our new proposed recycling building will be accepting a large variety of recyclable products, with the convenience of a drive thru building and attendants to help with the sorting process.

We want to encourage more school tours to educate future generations on the importance of recycling.

Our new proposed scale house. We will upgrade our scale to accommodate a separate entrance and exit to make the wait times faster and increase efficiency.

We are also investigating the possibility of incineration. If the partners in the Landfill Association decide to proceed with an incinerator it would assist local producers with their bio security problems, reducing dead cattle left to rot, eliminating potential spread of disease. It would help with the carnivore problems in southern Alberta, and extending the life expectancy of our landfill.

An incinerator will help the landfill’s bio security also; our staff has to deal with a wide variety of dead animals that could be cremated instead of having to be buried in our landfill.

It is both Alberta Environment and the Landfills intention to have stakeholder meetings prior to any approval to operate an incinerator.

Environment Canada has strict monitoring and screening standards in which we will have to comply to under our operating approval.

We will not be burning undesirable plastics or other garbage that would send chemicals into the air.

Our mandate is to operate this facility with the lowest possible environmental impact now and for future generations. We have sufficient long term investments put aside for environmental monitoring long after the landfill is closed.
