Peewee Chinooks edge Cardston Thunder at home

Christian Davis

Pincher Creek's Peewee Chinooks hosted Cardston's Thunder at the Memorial Community Centre Arena on Friday evening, January 15. A particularly strong showing buy the Chinooks in the second period helped them secure a 10-9 win. Chinooks #5 Logan Deley earned a hat trick and two assists. Thunder #14 Lawson Penner earned a hat trick +1. Thunder Captain Hunter Heavy Runner scored twice and earned 4 assists. Chinooks #9 Cade Ames earned 3 assists. Penalties were very minimal, with 1 for the Chinooks and 4 for the Thunder.

The Thunder established an early lead, with a goal from Hunter Heavy Runner and Lawson Penner early in the first. Heavy Runner was assisted by Graedon Woodward and Rodic Pickens. Penner's goal was unassisted. The Chinooks evened things up with two goals by #6 Riley Potts, with assists going to Jaron Scotton, Tristan Blood, and Alexandre Comeau. Comeau put the Chinooks ahead after that with an unassisted goal. Woodward then scored for the Thunder unassisted, tying it up again. Then with 5:06 remaining in the period Logan Deley scored for the Chinooks, assisted by Rhett Fitzpatrick. The Chinooks were ahead 4-3 at the end of the first.

The game was delayed mid-period when the Thunder's goalie had to be replaced due to illness, and another player had to suit up in the goalie gear. That narrowed the Chinooks lead to just 1 goal as the clock began to run out. Then with 2:41 remaining Logan Deley earned his hat trick, assisted by Caleb Evans and Cade Ames. The Thunder weren't about to give up, and were rewarded for their efforts by one more goal from Lawson Penner, his fourth of the game, assisted by Hunter Heavy Runner again and by Connor Roe, with 16.1 seconds left on the clock.
