ASBA looks forward to providing input on the Modernized Municipal Government Act

Alberta School Boards Association - Following introduction of Bill 21, the Modernized Municipal Government Act in the Alberta Legislature this afternoon, the Vice President of the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), Mary Martin, issued the following statement on behalf of the Association:

“Bill 21, the Modernized Municipal Government Act, is an important body of legislation for Alberta. The amended MGA is of great interest to school boards provincially, as elements contained within it intersect with school board responsibilities and authority. Specifically, there are important sections that relate to the building of new schools, the operation of existing schools, and funding.

“The Alberta School Boards Association has appreciated the opportunity to engage in a number of valuable conversations with Minister Larivee regarding the amended MGA as this legislation was prepared for introduction in the legislature today. We have had an opportunity to share the concerns of our membership with the Minister of Municipal Affairs, and we look forward to future opportunities to provide thoughtful input once we have reviewed the draft legislation in detail.

“As the association representing all 61 publicly-funded school boards in Alberta, we also anticipate opportunities for school boards and the ASBA to engage meaningfully in the province-wide consultation process taking place over the next couple of months.”

The Alberta School Boards Association serves and represents Alberta’s 61 school boards.
