Hawks U18 soccer team back in first place following win against Sparwood

Hawks (in green) vs Sparwood

Josh Davis - On Thursday May 2 the U18 Hawks soccer team took to Sproule field in Pincher Creek, hosting their counterparts from Sparwood. The game was close in the first half, with the Hawks playing against the wind, and Sparwood scoring the first goal of the game. However, the Hawks got into gear in the second half, winning 4-2. With this victory the Hawks have regained their first place standing in the league, followed by Elkford then Sparwood.

#11 Sam Gerrand scored the Hawks only goal of the first half. The Hawks were a little sluggish out of the gate, and had trouble keeping up with Sparwood. However, early in the second Hawks sweeper Jordan Hochstein, who Soudeck called his best player of the game, scored. Later Jesse Saulner and Liam  VanEe would score goals of their own, giving the Hawks a three point lead. Sparwood scored one more goal in defiance before the game ended.

“It was the first time I had to raise my voice,” said Hawks Head Coach Ondrej Soudeck. “So probably some of them won’t be my friends anymore. But it was a completely different team in the second half. We won, and we deserved it.”Soudeck said that the wind was a factor in the game. “We played against the wind in the first half, so obviously it was harder on our goalie and our defensive players.” However, the Hawks also played with the wind at their back for the second half, assisting with one of their goals.

The Hawks are scheduled to host a tournament  coming up on the weekend of June 25-26.
